SR-1 exists at the intersection of functional design and sculptural form.

Defined by its asymmetrical composition, the rug explores tension as a material condition. Smooth woven wool surfaces contrast with expressive silk–wool fiber formations that appear to emerge organically from the base — suggesting processes of growth, transformation, and gradual dissolution.

The composition unfolds as if expanding from within. Irregular fiber structures subtly infiltrate the calm woven field, creating a dynamic relationship between order and organic development. Through light, shadow, and touch, the rug reveals its sculptural presence and invites direct physical engagement.

Each piece is conceived as a collectible design object and hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Nepal using traditional techniques.

Produced in a strictly limited edition of 8 pieces plus 2 Artist’s Proofs, every rug is individually signed and numbered.

The designer

Ewelina Mąkosa is a multidisciplinary artist born in Warsaw, Poland, working across painting, video, animation, and installation. Her practice explores the relationship between humans and objects, examining how material artifacts carry memory and reflect collective and personal histories.

Her work frequently engages with fragments of public space, archival remnants, and decaying materials, investigating processes of transformation, fragility, and the traces left by time and social change. Central to her research is an interest in material behavior — its tensions, vulnerability, and capacity for continuous transformation.

Bridging artistic inquiry and design, Mąkosa translates conceptual ideas into hand-knotted rugs that function as sculptural objects. These works extend her ongoing exploration of corporeality and material processes into the realm of functional art.

SR-1 marks the first rug in an evolving series of collectible works, introducing a new body of practice in which textile becomes a primary medium for spatial and tactile investigation. This initial edition serves as the foundation for future works that will further expand her exploration of material growth, tension, and transformation.

Together with Jan Garncarek, she runs a studio dedicated to functional art and collectible design.

She holds a PhD from the University of the Arts in Poznań and an MFA in Interior Architecture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Her work has been exhibited internationally across multiple media, exploring the intersections of art, design, and material experimentation.
