Part of Milan Pekař’s ongoing exploration of crystalline glazes, this vase reveals the expressive potential of ceramic surfaces through controlled chemical reactions and carefully calibrated firing processes.

Developed through months of glaze research and repeated test firings, the crystalline surface forms as temperature is precisely adjusted during the firing cycle. Metallic oxides introduced into the glaze encourage crystalline structures to grow, producing luminous patterns and depth unique to each piece.

To present these complex surfaces with clarity, the vase is based on a simple geometric form. The model is first created in plaster, then slip-cast in porcelain to achieve a pure surface that allows the crystalline glaze to remain the visual focus. The result is a balanced composition where material transformation, light, and color interact with restraint.

Handcrafted in the Czech Republic, the piece exists at the intersection of ceramic research, material experimentation, and collectible design.

The designer

Milan Pekař is a Czech ceramics designer and maker. He is considered to be one of the most important makers in the field of contemporary Czech ceramics and porcelain. He studied at the AAAD Prague, where he now works as a senior assistant in the Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain with Maxim Velčovský. In the last four years he focused on making a unique form of a crystalline glaze especially on vases. And it were these vases that have won him a Public Award Czech Grand Design 2014.Milan finds this glaze so fascinating he spends all his available time experimenting on new colour combination. After spending many countless hours and overcoming many disastrous results, he finally discovered the satisfactory formulation. An on going search for new colours resulted in some unusual glazes, specifically the metallic crystalline glazes that are very rare.
