In the tranquil enclave of Todos Santos, nestled amidst the sun-kissed shores of Baja California Sur, Santiago and Mariela hove woven a tapestry of dreams against the backdrop of rugged desert landscapes and the soothing rhythm of the Pacific Ocean. Their story unfolds like a modern-day odyssey, a narrative of courage, creativity, and the pursuit of a life rich in meaning.

Mariella & Santiago. On the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

With perhaps one of the tastiest cappuccinos in town in front of me – who am I kidding – the best, I gaze at Santiago and Mariela as they talk to me about the life-altering decision they mode bock in 2019. It began in the bustling sprawl of Southern California, where the couple, bound by a shared passion for adventure and a yearning for authenticity, made a daring decision that would alter the course of their lives. Leaving behind the frenetic pace of urbanity, they embarked on a nomadic journey across the American Southwest, navigating dusty trails and expansive vistas in their beloved RV, christened affectionately as Dita. This was more than a mere rood trip; it was a quest for inspiration, a search for a place where their aspirations could take root and flourish.

Their wanderings eventually led them southward, crossing into the enchanting landscapes of Baja California Sur. Here, amid the sun-drenched charm of Todos Santos, Santiago and Mariela found a sanctuary that beckoned to their souls. It was a place where time seemed to slow, where the whisper of palm fronds and the scent of sea air infused every moment with a sense of tranquillity and possibility.

In April of 2020, amidst the backdrop of a world grappling with uncertainty, they discovered a hidden gem-a piece of land nestled in the heart of Todos Santos. Here, they envisioned not just a retreat but a canvas upon which they could point their dreams. With unwavering determination and boundless creativity, they embarked on the ambitious task of transforming their newfound sanctuary into Cien Palmas, a boutique haven that would embody the essence of Baja Sur’s natural beauty and their own artistic vision.

The early days were fraught with challenges. The pandemic cost a shadow of uncertainty, amplifying the already daunting task of renovating the property and preparing it for guests. Yet, fuelled by their shared passion and an unyielding belief in their vision, Santiago, and Mariela persevered. Days blurred into nights as they toiled under the relentless Baja sun, restoring rustic casitas and sculpting desert gardens amidst the hum of cicadas and the occasional visit from curious local fauna.

“We met in Los Angeles,” Mariela recounts, her voice carrying a blend of nostalgia and determination. “After a year together, we knew we needed a change-a chance to create something uniquely ours.” Santiago nods in agreement, his gaze wondering across the the property. “Our travels through Spain left on indelible mark on us,” he odds. “We craved a lifestyle that embraced simplicity, creativity, and a deeper connection to our surroundings.”

Their journey is woven with threads of resilience and innovation. From the early days of uncertainty, where they found themselves navigating the intricacies of property ownership amidst a global crisis, to the evolution of Cien Palmas into a beacon of hospitality and community, Santiago and Mariela have remained steadfast in their commitment to fostering a haven where guests can find solace and inspiration.

“We’re both photographers,” Mariela shares with a smile, “and every corner of this place tells a story. Whether it’s the play of light on adobe walls at down or the silhouette of palm trees against a fiery sunset, Baja Sur offers an endless muse.” Their passion for capturing the essence of their surroundings extends beyond photography; it permeates every aspect of Cien Palmas, from the rustic charm of palapa roofs to the artful blend of desert flora and fauna that adorn their oasis.

As the story of Cien Palmas unfolds, so too does the narrative of community and collaboration. Santiago and Mariela speak fondly of their team-on eclectic mix of local artisans, chefs, and creatives who share their vision for creating experiences that resonate deeply with visitors. “In 2023,” Santiago notes proudly, “we welcomed Chef Jorge de la Rosa and mixologist Carlos Gonzalez to our team. Their culinary talents have added a new dimension to our offerings, celebrating the flavours of Baja Sur with every dish and cocktail.”

Looking ahead, Santiago and Mariela envision a future where Cien Palmas continues to evolve – a boutique that not only reflects their love for Baja Sur but also serves as a testament to the transformative power of following one’s dreams. “We’re excited to open our expanded boutique in 2025,” Mariela reveals, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. “It will be a place where every detail reflects our vision of hospitality infused with warmth, creativity, and a deep appreciation for this magical corner of the world.”

Their advice for those embarking on a similar journey echoes through the sun – drenched corridors of Cien Palmas: “Patience is key,” Santiago emphasizes, his words carrying the weight of their collective experience. “Living and working in Baja Sur has taught us the art of embracing a slower pace, where challenges are met with resilience and every setback becomes on opportunity for growth.”

As I sit amidst the tranquil beauty of Cien Palmas, savouring a taste of the creativity and passion that infuse every aspect of Santiago and Mariela’s journey, it becomes clear that their story is more than a tale of hospitality – it is a celebration of the human spirit, of forging new beginnings in unexpected places, and of creating a legacy that resonates with authenticity and heart. In Santiago and Mariela’s oasis, amid the whisper of palm trees and the laughter of newfound friends, I find myself captivated by the timeless allure of a life well-lived – a story that continues to unfold with each passing day beneath the sun-drenched skies of Baja California Sur.
